Spruce Meadows

After our picnic lunch and look at the falls at Kananaskis Park we drove onto Spruce Meadows the famous International Show Jumping Park.

Here we see Marilyn Little-Meredith from the USA on Blue Curacao taking the third to last jump perfectly with a time of 139.706 and only 4 jump faults, she won the Mercedes-Benz Classic Derby. The course had two jumps that were diabolical, behind her you can see a high piece of grass, the riders had to go behind the stand and climb up the back and take a jump on the top, then slid down the grass and take a fence jump at the bottom of the drop. The other very difficult jump was a triple over rails into a dip, over another rail in the dip and then another rail jumping out of the dip.
The 'Royal Canadians' were a cavalry division prior to the Second World War, who used to fight on horseback but who now use armoured vehicles. They are the regular honour guard at Spruce Meadows and fired the salute at the raising of the flag.
