Mexico Beach on New Years Eve

We stopped at Rustic Sands Camp Ground at Mexico Beach, still in Florida for New Years Eve. We walked the soft white sandy beach looking for sand dollars but found only pelicans sleeping on the pilings.

The campground had a party that evening but only some of the crew of 'Dutchess' made it through until midnight to welcome in the New Year. Bill disappeared around 10pm and Yvonne and Kath watched the Phantom of the Opera until 12:30am.

Old Town and the Suwannee River

On the move again after over three weeks on one place, we traveled north on Hwy 98 up into the pan handle of Florida, through Dade City, Brooksville, Crystal River, Chiefland and Oldtown. It was a lovely sunny day until we drove under the cold front moving south, with light misty rain, temp dropped from 23c to 7c that evening. We stopped for the night at a very rustic RV Camp ground called Suwanne River Hideaway at Oldtown.

Just before dark we went for a walk to get rid of the ' traveling kinks' along the half mile boardwalk out the the Suwannee River. We heard an Air Boat go by but did not see any other traffic on the river while we were there.

Along the boardwalk there were about four or five trees that had been drilled through, a metal sleeve inserted into the hole and then the wire for the hand rails of the boardwalk threaded through. Over time the tree has grown out over the metal sleeve and sealed the wound.

Lakeland RV Park

Lakeland Carefree RV Resort. Were we have just spent three and a half weeks, the longest we have stopped anywhere on this safari around North America.

Our neighbours Mike, Dianne and Driver from Ontario with their new 42' Phaeton. Mike kept waxing and polishing the coach so much that we are convinced that in a years time he will not have any paint left. It is a really lovely motor home.

The sign says No Swimming, Beware of Alligator. Not sure about that one alligator but we did see lots of turtles and quite large fish.

Tampa Bay

26th December, Boxing Day and Kath's 60th Birthday.
We had another quite day, but Yvonne and Kath managed to get in some shopping with all the wonderful sales at the local mall. Then the three of us went out for dinner at the Outback Restaurant.

27th December, we went for a drive in 'Granny' to Tampa about 60 miles away, then around the bay to St. Petersburg. Then on up the coast along the Gulf of Mexico, with the lovely fine white sandy beaches. Even here although we have 22c to 28c there are very few people on the beaches as it is winter. We all had a good laugh about this restaurant called, Crabby Bill's Seafood Co.

Christmas Day

Christmas morning we slept in and had a late champagne brunch of waffles, eggs and bacon. We opened our presents then took a drive around the lakes. The evening was taken up with libations and a wonderful turkey dinner. As we were still recovering from Yvonne's delayed and re-routed arrival in the early a.m. we cut Christmas evening short and retired early.

The Birds of Lakeland

In the afternoon of Christmas Day we took Yvonne for a drive around one of the many lakes in downtown Lakeland. These are just some of the birds we came across. The first is a White Heron, the second is a Stork, Third is a variety of the lake's inhabitants, including Swan, duck, geese, crane and stork. The forth photo is of Sandhill Cranes on the road just outside Lakeland RV Park.

Christmas break in Central Florida

By the time we reached Central Florida we have been 'On the Road' since early June with our longest stop in one place being less than 10 days. The Lakeland area seems like an ideal place to settle in for 2 or 3 weeks over the Holiday Season. Lakeland is about equal distance between Tampa on the Gulf of Mexico and Orlando/Disney World to the East. The city of Lakeland supports a citrus growing area and various high tech industries.

There is a large selection of RV Parks in the area most of them catering to the number of 'Snow Birds' that migrate south each year to escape the winter. We are lucky to get into this RV Park, with about 280 sites surrounding a small lake with a 'No Swimming' and 'Beware of Alligator' signs. Most of the many RV Parks in the area will have no vacancies from the beginning of January till the end of March.

Florida is a very interesting area to spend some time during the winter months, lots of facilities and many attractions to keep 'idle' minds busy. No where in Florida is more than 100 kms from the ocean and the many excellent beaches. The summer would be a totally different story with sweltering heat and very high humidity. Anyone that leaves their trailer or motor home here during the summer leaves the air conditioning set at 28 degrees and kitty litter in containers to absorb the moisture.

Epcot - Disney World

Epcot is one of four main Theme Parks at Disney World that lets you visit the world in a day and explore the possibilities of the future. But each takes at least a day to explore.

They are; Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Epcot is in many ways modeled after a 'World's Fair'. The Future World, with its 9 pavilions and rides, challenges your imaginations. The World Showcase takes you on a tour of 11 countries where one can experience their culture, lifestyles and food.

Epcot is the third most visited theme park in the United States.

Disney World covers an area of forty square miles, and with the Theme Parks mentioned above also has, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, two huge water parks. There is Downtown Disney, with shops, restaurants, pubs and Cirque du Soleil.

Spaceship Earth

See yourself in the future (literally) as you ride, create, complete and explore the Park's amazing icon.

Universe of Energy

Ride back to prehistoric times of the dinosaur and the creation of energy....oil.

Mission: Space

Join in an adventure to Mars, with a full flight simulation from launching to landing on Mars.
Each crew member is assigned specific tasks on this flight.

Test Track

Board a GM vehicle on the longest, fastest attraction in Disney history. Unfortunately we missed this one as it was closed for technical reasons!

Mexico

Enter a very authentic Mexican town square and enjoy a boat ride through parts of the real Mexico.

Norway

One of my favourites, a history of the Viking explorations over 1000 years ago. They ventured over large parts of the known and unknown world, Europe, Greenland, Newfoundland, and into Asia.

The 'stave' church (as pictured) and a small Norwegian town around the corner were very well presented.

China

One of the larger pavilions featuring a 360 degree circle vision film and a very 'life like' half size display and history of the terracotta warriors.

Germany

Enjoy the German Oktoberfest with entertainment in a very Bavarian setting.

Epcot Lake

Epcot was built around the Lake.

These photos show Spaceship Earth from Italy, China Pavilion and Showcase Plaza with Spaceship Earth. Later in the afternoon, barges were being positioned on the lake for the evenings entertainment of fireworks.

Italy

Very fine buildings, including a 'leaning' tower.

Several Restaurants are on location and serving pasta and fine Italian specialties.

The American Adventure

The American Adventure
takes guests on a trip through America's rich 200-plus year history. It is narrated by figures of Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain. The show is presented in a theater-like auditorium, with sets and characters rising out from the stage floor to represent scenes from different historical periods. The characters provide insight into American life of the past through conversations in which they discuss the current events of their time. Periods include the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 (representing American industrialization), and the Great Depression. The presentation culminates with a musical film montage representing famous moments and people in American history from post-World War II to the present. All the actors are life size animated figures.

Japan

Three different restaurants serving a wide variety of Japanese foods.
