In Grand-Pre is the National Historic Site that commemoratesthe town's Acadian settlers who established a prosperous agricultural area, but were deported in 1755-63 to various British colonies in North America and back to France. Most of the land that they cultivated was below sea level. In the adjoining photos is a model of their dyke's, and the one way drainage system that allowed the land to drain at low tide, but not to flood at high tide.
The Acadian village that once stood here inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline". Other highlights of the grounds include a memorial church, beautiful gardens and museum. Evangeline's Well, a statue of the fictional heroine and a bust of Longfellow. As you walk clockwise around the statue of Evangeline, her face seems to age.
