Fortress of Louisbourg
The Fortress is an accurate reconstruction of the massive fortress and town built by the French between 1720-45. Entering the site you are sure you are stepping back in history almost 300 years as all activities are set in 1744, the year before the fort fell to the British after a 6 week siege. Everyone in town is dressed and act as they would have in 1744. Even the 'pub' serves food from the period, and the table is set with only a large spoon, as everyone, male and female carried their own knife! The fort and the town buildings are the largest historical reconstruction in North America.
When first arriving on site we visited the fisherman's cottage that is located outside the fortress and main town. From there we entered the main gate and are challenged by the guard as they are on alert for any British that may try to enter, the year is 1744 and Britain and France are at war.
