Patrick our mechanic at Freightliner - Anchorage.
Monday, 16th July, we pulled out of Centennial Park Camp Ground in north eastern Anchorage intending to head south down the Kenai Penn. We stopped for some 'delux' diesel and then Dutchess pulled a 'sickie' on us. She had no power, could not get any speed and could only just make it into 3rd gear. We had pulled onto the Seward Hwy south with our four way flashers going and knew that we had to find a repair facility, and as luck would have it, there was the Freightliner Sign over the fence off the freeway. We pulled off at the next exit and found our way into their yard by the back door. Patrick was assigned to our job but could not start until later Monday afternoon. By quitting time he had replaced a very clogged huge air filter, due to the Top of the World Hwy, Bill had been watching the air filter gauge each day on that Hwy. Still no improvement, then he changed two fuel filters, still no change. So we camped in the Freightliner yard for the night. Pat was supposed to start at 9am yesterday morning but found he had a prebooked job. So we waited around all morning and finally decided to go for a drive in Granny. When we got back he was smiling as he had found the problem. Evidently we were not getting enough fuel as the fuel shut off valve had a broken lever. He had disconnected the valve and rigged it with a bungee cord and went for a drive and Dutchess drove just fine. The parts department said it would be Thursday before they could have one ordered and delivered but then they found one in stock. So first thing this morning, after another night camping in their yard, Pat was taking off the old fuel shut off valve and two of the three bolts sheared off.
At the moment we are still waiting and it is nearly lunch time.
