Tappin Zee Bridge and Delaware Memorial Br.
The Tappin Zee Bridge over the Hudson River, north of New York City is on Interstate 287, free going west but a toll bridge going east. We traveled south into New Jersey and spent the night at a very picturesque Passport America campground called Maplelake Camp Ground. Lovely campsites around a small lake but back in the trees were what Nancey would call 'Trailer Trash'.
We were on the road for two days of freeway travel, the only way to get around some of these huge cities, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore to reach Washington, DC. At times the freeways are four lanes wide each way with two lanes outside feeding in and out. We have found the semi drivers very courteous to us and when you give way to them they flash their lights in 'Thanks', but some car drivers certainly need to take a 'Defensive Drivers Course', as they have no idea the weight and size of the vehicle they are cutting in front of. We were following Interstate 95 south and New Jersey and Delaware are the two states that have had the most road and bridge tolls we have hit anywhere. The New Jersey Turnpike was $7.20 and then $7.00 to leave the state. The Delaware Memorial Bridge, leaving New Jersey, and crossing about ten miles through Delaware into Maryland, cost $16.00. $4.00 an axle x 4 axles = $16.00
