USS Constitution




Known reverentially as "Old Iornsides" is the oldest commissioned worship afloat in the world.
The U.S.S. Constitution's keel was laid down in 1794 and just three years later she was commissioned and launched on 21st October 1797, just a stone's throw from her berth today. The total cost of her construction was $302,718.00.
She saw active service until 1881, circumnavigated the world, fought in the Barbary Wars off the African coast in 1801, the war of 1812 between Britain and the New America's. In the 1920's and then again in 1990's she went through major restoration periods and is today the Navy's ambassador to the public. In 1997 she sailed again under her own sail power for the first time in 116 years.
She carried in 1812 a crew compliment of 450 -500. 32 - 24 pounder long guns, 20 - 32 pounder Carronades and 2 - 24 pound Bow Chasers. She is 204 feet long, Displaces 2,200 tons and her three masts are 198 ft, 220 ft and 172 ft. She can carry a sail area of 42,710 square feet and can reach speeds of 13 + knots.
