The mid-Atlantic coast stretches south from New York State through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.New York State stretches from New York City on the Atlantic Coast to Lake Ontario and the Quebec and Ontario border. We only saw a small part of the state in and around New York City.
Washington DC (District of Columbia) is not a state and is on the Potomac River just north of the border between Virginia and Maryland.
It is generally thought that the 'Southern States' start when you cross into Virginia.
